The Weekly Dispatch · 6 November 2026
Taking one bridge recently cost three vehicles and a considerable amount of professional credibility. Headquarters called the result disastrous. The Firefight diary records the disagreement. Invading Russia would therefore seem an ambitious next step, but the wargame industry has never allowed a shortage of competent generals to interfere with the release schedule.
This week, Twilight in the East approaches Moscow, WDS offers a discounted expedition to the Baltic, and Battlesector revises the arithmetic of being shot. There should be something here for every department of the procurement office.
Decisive Campaigns: Twilight in the East approaches 12 November
Matrix has pencilled in 12 November 2026 for Decisive Campaigns: Twilight in the East. The date comes from its Home of Wargamers announcement. The game page still says “In Development”, so keep the champagne somewhere it can be returned to the fridge.
VR Designs is sending battalion-sized formations across one-kilometre hexes, with four turns to a day and Operation Typhoon among the opening scenarios. Revised logistics, winter rules and PBEM++ multiplayer are on the publisher’s list. Moscow, presumably, has received the usual assurances that this will all be over before Christmas.
Supply is the interesting bit. An arrow on a map can reach Moscow in a second. Getting fuel, ammunition and an increasingly sceptical infantryman to follow it is where the evening goes. A readable supply system would be most welcome. One that lets a commander understand the impending disaster before clicking End Turn would be positively indulgent.
New to this scale of trouble? The computer wargaming guide explains the difference between tactical and operational games. Both allow mistakes. The latter supplies a larger filing cabinet.
WDS Great Northern War offer ends 8 November

Wargame Design Studio has chosen Musket & Pike: Great Northern War for its 2–8 November Game of the Week offer. Check the current store price before authorising the expedition. A WDS-store purchase also includes a Steam key, which should simplify the business of acquiring another war in two places at once.
The publisher lists 89 scenarios, editing tools and PBEM among the attractions. Sweden and its Baltic neighbours provide the disagreement. Anyone weary of counting German tanks can spend an evening discovering that cavalry also requires supervision.
There is something appealing about a period in which the uniforms suggest everyone expects to be painted afterwards. Whether the game suits you is a separate purchasing question, covered more usefully by the WDS buying guide than by the word “sale”. The discount ends on Sunday. The backlog’s resistance is expected to continue.
Battlesector catch-up: update 1.8.0 and a December campaign

A dispatch from 29 October has finally reached the appropriate desk. Slitherine’s Battlesector announcement brings update 1.8.0, including a new damage calculation system, a major Tyranid rebalance, variant loadouts and a skirmish map. Courage & Catastrophe, a new story campaign DLC, is scheduled for 14 December 2026.
Even the forty-first millennium occasionally has to stop the war while somebody checks the sums. A revised damage calculation is worth reading about before relying on an old favourite attack. The Tyranids are unlikely to accept “that worked last time” as grounds for an appeal.
The original Battlesector review supplies the earlier verdict. It predates these changes, and enthusiasm for a campaign title is a poor substitute for playing the campaign. Courage & Catastrophe does, admittedly, sound suspiciously like a description of my command record.
Which war gets your evening?
Moscow, the Baltic, or a return to Battlesector? Tell me which deserves the next evening and why. Anyone proposing “finish a game you already own” should be aware that this is a respectable wargaming establishment.
